Assistant Professor LaShawnDa Pittman is a member of the Mayors Council on African American Elders (MCAAE), appointed by the Mayor to serve as an intermediary between African American elders who experience multiple disparities and policy makers. MCAAE members and UW students identified several areas that need attention, including their overrepresentation among homeless individuals age 50 and older, kinship caregivers, and socially isolated and homebound elders. This work recently culminated in a report that details the gravity of these disparities as well as provides policy and practice solutions. During a retreat on March 14th at the Central Area Senior Center in the Central District,
UW students and MCAAE council members completed a report to be presented
to Mayor Ed Murray and city council members.
