2019-2020 Society of Scholars Fellow Jang Wook Huh (Department of American Ethnic Studies) has received a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Grant for his book, ‘Afro-Korean’ Encounters: The Literary Intersections of Black Liberation and Struggles in the U.S. and Anticolonial Movements in Korea. Drawing on a diverse range of archives, including U.S. missionary documents, declassified government files, and military records, as well as literary and cultural texts, ‘Afro-Korean’ Encounters will show how African American and Korean writers constitute a liberal modernity for human freedom through shared notions of dispossession.
