The Significance of Filipino Storytelling and The Pacific Northwest

Submitted by Shaila Sara Thomas on

In his newly published novel Uncle Rico’s Encore: Mostly True Stories of Filipino Seattle, Peter Bacho tells the tale of his community, childhood upbringing, and experiences growing up in Beacon Hill, one of Washington state's most diverse neighborhoods. Bacho weaves together the city of Seattle in connection to the Filipino experience as he calls his book an autobiographical love note to the community and beautiful city.

AES’ very own, Professor Rick Bonus, chimes in on Bacho’s novel, stating, “The Filipino community in the Northwest is very interesting compared to other places in the United States… He [Peter Bacho] is also locating himself as accessible not only to different kinds of Filipinos and different communities of color, but to all of Seattle and readers who are interested in history and culture”.
