"MARTIAL ARTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE" THIS SEMINAR EXPLORES THE LITERATURE, MUSIC, VISUAL ART, AND PERFORMING ARTS OF THE BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT, THE SIBLING MOVEMENT OF THE BLACK POWER MOVEMENT. EACH WEEK, STUDENTS WILL RIGOROUSLY ENGAGE WITH IN-DEPTH READING ASSIGNMENTS AND SENSORY ACTIVITIES IN CLASS. THEMES COVERED INCLUDE ANTI-BLACK VIOLENCE, GENDER ROLES, SELF-LOVE, SOCIOECONOMIC INEQUITY, AND BLACK EMPOWERMENT.
Catalog Description:
Comparative interdisciplinary study of race and ethnicity. Examines experiences and cultural expressions of racialized communities in the U.S. and its diasporas from a cultural studies' perspective. Explores how expressive cultures engage and transform racial formations and their intersections, animating social relations of everyday life and reshaping structures of power. Offered: AWSpS.
